Las Vegas Wedding Package-My Slide show video at the end.
Please read this over watch the full video and add your experiences when you were a guest with your camera at a wedding not the Wedding Photographer .......
I was an out of town guest at the wedding, I had my Canon D5 Mark II and flash only for a few days, had just switched from Nikon. I did crack the books for a few hours before the trip. The count on the camera shutter by the time I took my first photo in Las Vegas at night was
"img0372":huh:huh
Ashley went with a Wedding Package for coverage of her Wedding. :barb:barb No stress, Food, Vegas, no driving, Beer, Vacation time. Did I mention Free Beer, Free Food, Vegas! in MARCH. :eat:beer Great, new camera new flash, and a wedding to attend.:scratch :scratch I could not resist using the new camera. I was armed with 1 flash, 1 camera and 2 lenses (F4 L range 24-200). Well by no means was I going to miss the fun and I did not want to bother the Wedding Photographer. At the event I kept my distance, never called for any one to look my way but did have to remind a few people that I was not the photographer. :deal:deal Just before and during the wedding, I did catch the photographer copying what I was doing.
How many of you would honestly try this at the formals.
Camera exp# IMG_0890 800iso 1/6 Second Exp F/4.5 Outside at night, hand held WB from raw
OR THIS
Camera exp# IMG_0825 F/4 1/8 SEC EXP ISO3200 24mm OUTSIDE AT NIGHT HAND HELD
How about this
Camera exp# IMG_0820 F/4 "1/2 SEC EXP" ISO800 24mm OUTSIDE AT NIGHT HAND HELD
This is sure a keeper I think.
Camera exp# IMG_0809 F/4 "8/10 SEC EXP" ISO400 24MM OUTSIDE AT NIGHT HAND HELD
I was not the photographer at the wedding so I didn't get all the photos that you normally need to complete a nice package.
And you know I tried not to get in the way. Did I mention Free Beer, Free Food, Vegas! IN MARCH. :eat:beer
That is not me but you could see I was feeling It. Things did get a little blurry.
Do you see what I did, I let loose. I did things that I would not do at a Wedding for which I was paid. I learned a lot from doing this and from looking over what I did.
I learned that F4 L lenses are sharp but the need for speed is greater, I now have a 50mm f1.4, and plan to get a 85mm1.8 and a wide 28mm or 24mm-f/1.8. I learned that high ISO on the d5 Mark II is not bad and by using the higher ISO the background gets brighter and brighter. It's the same with the aperture, I knew all this, but this was a very good reminder. You always have a trade off, fast lens-soft photo/ high ISO-bad noise/long exposure-blurry photo.
I always enjoyed landscape photography with extreme sharpness, infinite depth of field and extreme control of camera shake, waiting for the wind and just the right moment. I use a tripod, MLU, and cable release to avoid any contact with the camera from taking away from the photo. In this wedding I learned that I like the effects of dragging your shutter and camera movement at the same time. Almost to the point of swing the camera from the strap. At one point I think I did that, must have been the beer. When dragging the shutter its hard to control a good outcome but the good photos are very good.
A wedding is a celebration that we share, as a photographer it's part of our job to show it. Being a guest was a reminder that, if you join in on the celebration it shows.
I don't mean drink:deal.
Now my Christmas present to the bride and groom. It's a secret, don't telll them. PS: This has two videos in it, small dead spot in the middle.

I got a chuckle looking at the paid photog in your #4 image in this post - I see that flash position outside all the time and it makes me wonder every time I see it!

The camera was an older one without canon digi 4 so she must of had lots of gran in her photos. I bet she went through a ton of batterys in that flash. I did see her turn it to the side a few times. She was even over 15 feet away a few times with that thing.
I picked up my flashes from e bay and never got a diffuser and don't think that it helps much. I will bounce off walls, ceilings or use a large bounce card . I like to keep my flash over my lens. I now have two flashes and use one off camera with a t 12in bounce card or bounce off the walls. If I am back far I will point the flash right at the B.G. .
Here were its tough, I don't like flash much after looking at Alersandras Babicius http://meninenuotrauka.lt/2009/ernesta_marius/. I am moving towards faster glass so I can work with the and not bend and brake the light with a flash.
I still want a 3rd flash to work with at times. Its hard to change, and the F4 lense don't help.
